The Vote Get Goal Worksheet

Ask a first-time candidate how many votes they need and you usually get half the district’s population, or a shrug. Both answers lose races.

This is the model I build for every campaign I work on, and it does something most “win number calculators” don’t: it weights.

You enter two comparable prior elections — total registration, registration by party, ballots actually cast by party, for each. It derives turnout percentage for every party in both cycles. Then you decide how much each of those cycles should count. A presidential year and a municipal off-year are not the same electorate, and pretending they are is how campaigns end up with a vote goal that was never achievable.

From that weighting it produces a likely weighted turnout percentage — overall, and separately for Democrats, Republicans and Other. Apply your current registration numbers and you get four things that actually drive decisions:

• Likely overall turnout — how many humans are voting at all
• Your vote-get goal — the number you have to hit
• Your likely votes — what your own party’s turnout gets you before you persuade anyone
• Voters to persuade — the gap between those two

That last number is the one that changes how people campaign. It’s usually much smaller than candidates fear and much more specific than they expect, and it’s what tells you whether this race is won on turnout or on persuasion.
